Novatium has launched netPC in collobration with BSNL across India some time back. NetPC is like a computer which takes care of daily computing needs such as Internet surfing, chatting, word documents, spreadsheets etc without even having knowledge about computers. Novatium boasts of its netPC as a simple and easy to use device which can cater the need of most households. NetPC doesn’t have any storage device and is marketed as a maintenance free device with regular technical, antivirus updates and customer support by Novatium.

Novatium is already having a customer base of around 2000 users and is planning to add another 2 lakh customers by the end of year. BSNL is launching this service all over India targeting a huge consumer base in a short span of time.NetPC is already available in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Haryana, Lucknow, North East telecom circle and in some regions of Delhi in collaboration with MTNL. NetPC works over the network and do not need any storage device to store user data , It stores user data over the server and fetch the data from the server whenever user need it. NetPC supports other peripherals like monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer etc just like a normal PC and is running Ubuntu linux.

Mr K. P. Roy, Vice-President, Novatium Solutions Pvt Ltd, says that ” NetPC uses a globally patented desktop utility delivery model (DUDM) developed by the company. It supports Linux, Mac and Windows operating systems. Its server-driven delivery feature makes it an ‘obsolescence-proof PC’ as all updates are carried out centrally through the server”.

According to Novatium they are offering computing as a service in which initial costs should be very less and user will have to pay only for the services they use. User can purchase a netPC for 2999 excluding monitor, installation charges. Users have to pay separately for using the service whose monthly subscription starts from Rs 274 including BSNL broadband charges.

Private players like Bharti Airtel are also joining the bandwagon, Bharti has also launched NetPc having similar functionalities in collaboration with Nivio. Nivio will be providing the hardware and software ( Original Windows XP ) while Airtel will be providing the broadband services. Airtel NetPC is running on Windows XP and users get 10GB of server space to store their data including documents,photos,presentations etc.

Airtel NetPC costs around 7,999 which includes plug-n-play online computer, 15 inch LCD monitor,Keyboard,mouse and Airtel Broadband to enable customers to connect to internet.Airtel is targetting 1 million subscribers for this service. According to Srinivas “We expect first-time buyers of computers to go for these Net PCs. Additionally, households that have kids may opt for these machines instead of investing in pricey computers. Moreover, there are small businesses which can use these Net PCs to only pay for services and applications they need. They need not worry about viruses, crashes or security since we take care of the backend,”

Airtel NetPC is available at Airtel and Next stores in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida from 23 May and will soon launch it across India depending on the initial response.

NetPC seems to be an interesting concept where users can take care of daily computing needs without even having the knowledge of the computer intricacies and without worrying about computer viruses , backups, updates etc.
